Consultation has concluded

Thank you for your interest in the Free Wharf project. Progress is well underway on the first phase of buildings along Brighton Road. You can view recent drone footage of the site below.

This first phase of the development will deliver 137 affordable homes, available for occupation from Summer 2023.

Phase 2 consultation

Following a detailed review, the project team has identified opportunities to deliver greater benefits, bringing the second phase of the project up to date with best practice. We intend to submit a revision to the original planning application this summer and welcome any comments you may have

Phase 2 consultation

Following a detailed review, the project team has identified opportunities to deliver greater benefits, bringing the second phase of the project up to date with best practice. We intend to submit a revision to the original planning application this summer and welcome any comments you may have about the proposals.

Key changes

  • Increase the number of homes by 39 through infilling (the overall building heights will not change)
  • Increase the number of affordable homes to 321 in total - representing over 50% of homes on the development
  • Reduce the number of parking spaces serving the commercial units to take account of changed post-pandemic habits
  • Replace some commercial parking spaces with a car club hub that will provide residents with a genuine alternative to car ownership. The hub will also be available to non-residents and the surrounding community
  • Changes to the river walkway (requiring less intervention into the tidal mudflats)
  • Changes to the energy strategy, resulting in CO2 reductions of at least 59% over that required by the Building Regulations

We believe these changes are modest in the context of the overall scheme. The images below compare the approved scheme at the top with proposed changes below, to help you form your own view.
